Teddy bears were made to honor American President Theodore Roosevelt. Theodore Roosevelt went bear hunting near Onward, Mississippi on November 14, 1902. Mississippi Governor Andrew H. Longino had invited him. Unlike some of the other hunters in the group, Roosevelt had failed to kill a single bear.

Holt Collier, a born slave and former Confederate cavalryman, led Roosevelt's aides in trapping and tying a black bear to a willow tree. Roosevelt was summoned and asked to shoot it. Roosevelt refused to shoot the bear because he considered it unsportsmanlike.

This quickly spread across the country via newspaper stories. The reports focused on the president's refusal to shoot a bear. It wasn't just any president, either; it was big game hunter Theodore Roosevelt.

Clifford Berryman, a political cartoonist, saw the report and decided to make fun of the president's refusal to shoot the bear. Berryman's cartoon appeared in the "Washington Post" on November 16, 1902. Morris Michtom, the owner of a Brooklyn candy shop, was inspired by the cartoon. He and his wife Rose made stuffed animals as well, and Michtom decided to make a plush toy bear for the president who refused to shoot a bear. He named it "Teddy's Bear."

After obtaining Roosevelt's permission to use his name, Michtom mass produced the toy bears, which were so successful that he founded the Ideal Toy Company. Teddy bear sales grew so quickly in a few years that he founded a soft toy company to manufacture them.
